Skin professionals believe that a good facial serum is an investment to have. We couldn’t agree more! Although we can all nod to this notion, some people tend to neglect the ‘serum step’ in their routine. Serums deliver targeted results due to their high concentration of active ingredients that are beneficial to our skin. It can also act as the barrier protector and smooth the skin surface, creating a beautiful base for our makeup.
However, buying the most promising formula out there won’t fully cater to your skincare needs if you aren’t using it correctly. Read on to discover some tips on how to get the most out of your serum!
Apply it in the right order
It sounds like a no-brainer, but some of us might be surprised that serums should be applied on a damp face right after cleansing and before moisturiser (read: moisturiser mistakes you could be making!), to ensure its efficacy. You can check the consistency of your products to know if you’re applying them correctly. When in doubt, keep the thinnest to thickest consistency rule in mind. This way, you ensure maximum absorption of ingredients into our skin layers. Easy-peasy!
Pat, don’t rub
Let’s face it, slapping and rubbing your skincare products in an abstract motion seems like a faster way to go. Trust us, if you want your serum to deliver results, the best way to apply it is to gently pat 4-6 drops onto different areas of your face to seal the formula. Rubbing serum aggressively only risks irritating your face, and boy, don’t we want to avoid that!
Exfoliate your skin beforehand
Skin exfoliation holds the key to your serum’s success rate. Why? Exfoliating your skin before applying serum removes dead skin cells and ensures a better canvas for absorption. Thus, your skin will give access to serum actives to penetrate deeper into your skin.
Be sure not to overdo this, though, as over-exfoliated skin has a bigger chance of getting irritated and having the skin barrier compromised. We recommend pairing the Australian Glow Berries Enzyme Powder Polish with your favorite serum for a gentle exfoliation two to three times a week. The powder-to-foam formula contains antioxidant-rich ingredients such as Australian Emu Apple and Glow Berries that help slough off dead skin cells and promote cell turnover.
Apply serum regularly
Using serum inconsistently only decreases the effectiveness of its ingredients in the long run. Though serums boast a high concentration of active ingredients, they should not be mistaken as a one-off treatment. To see the results, you need to use serums twice daily for the effects to last and create an impact on your complexion.
You can, however, alter your serums to target specific concerns daily. Our team’s favorite AM routine step is using the Australian Glow Berries Dreamy Glow Drops Serum to boost glow and radiance. Formulated with the powerful Kakadu Plum (also known as the world’s richest source of vitamin C *winks*) and Polyphenols, the bi-phase serum is a trustworthy ally in defeating dullness and fine lines.
Our ultimate PM routine won’t be complete without the Tasmanian Spring Water Splash Serum. This serum is our go-to for barrier protection, hydration, and nourishment. Not only it is rich in minerals from the Tasmanian Spring Water, the probiotic from Fermented Sea Kelp and Bifida Ferment also supports skin health and fights inflammation. What’s not to love?
Lock it in with a moisturiser
This is often mentioned, often forgotten. Some of us still treat serums as a replacement for moisturisers, and we’re here to remind you time and again that you’ll still need moisturisers to lock all the goodness from your serum. Moisturisers act as skin’s hydrator that binds everything in whereas serums are useful to target skin concerns. Therefore, you cannot swap them.
At times, we also skip it out of fear of having too many products sitting on our face. After all, some moisturisers contain heavy formulations that might suffocate your skin. Not our Tasmanian Spring Water Hydration Boost Cream, though. After application, the gel-cream formula leaves no trace of oily or filmy feel, making it the perfect match for any serum to work its magic. Have we mentioned that it’s excellent for all skin types without nasty ingredients too? Choosing a partner for your serum has never been easier!
